Words from the owner

This latest instalment Andrew Webber reflects on the current developments within our industry, how our business is preparing for the year ahead, and what to consider when making your next wardrobe investment.

While the menswear industry continues to place a strong emphasis on casual ensembles, I have observed a noticeable shift back towards more structured, tailored garments at recent buyer events. These events provide an opportunity for myself and other industry professionals to preview the latest collections available to stockists for the upcoming seasons. My focus at these events remains firmly on formalwear, as I am proud that Clifton Suits continues to champion timeless, tailored pieces.

Although we occasionally introduce limited ranges of seasonal pieces, for example; floral or geometric shirts, as well as knitwear during the autumn months, I ensure these items can still be styled in a smart-casual setting to elevate an outfit rather than make it appear overly casual. There are countless retailers offering casual clothing, and it is easy to become lost in a market where everyone is doing the same. That is precisely why we remain committed to offering refined, formal garments that stand apart.

Our Spring/Summer range was released earlier this year and is now available in-store. We are seeing more clients planning ahead for upcoming events and, more broadly, a growing preference for versatile pieces that can be worn throughout the year rather than for a single season. This season, alongside our pastel suiting options and the return of our linen and wool-blend suits in beige and navy, we have increased production of our own in-house designs. By sourcing materials from British mills and designing the suits ourselves, we retain greater control over the quality, fit, and longevity of each garment, rather than being restricted by seasonal supplier trends and changing fashions.

We have also seen a fantastic increase in demand for bespoke garments, which remains at the heart of what we do. If you have the time, budget, and appreciation for craftsmanship, investing in a bespoke piece will always provide the highest quality and the best long-term value. Our garments made with either half or full canvas construction, give the wearer lasting shape and structure over many years. With proper care and maintenance, a well-made suit can last 10 years or more.

I am still wearing my very first Clifton Suits suit, made in 2013. It has likely been worn between 600 and 700 times. While it may show its age now, it has more than justified its cost, equivalent to around £920 in today’s pricing.

My advice is simple: treat your next purchase as an investment. Consider what you are buying it for and what you want to achieve from it. Share your requirements with me and the team, and we will guide you towards the options that best suit your needs, style, and long-term wardrobe.
